Day 2: Athens, Ohio

We left DC in glorious sunshine and, after a quick return to pick up the itinerary (!), we headed to Ohio on US50. The route took us through northern Virginia - 'Hunt Country' - which was straight out of a Jilly Cooper novel; paddocks, polo and lots of ponies. After a quick stop in Winchester (setting for Deer Hunting with Jesus, a must-read explanation of the US mentality) for supplies, we began to ascend the Allegheny mountains in West Virginia. It was a long, slow drive with perilous bends (some speed limits as low as 15mph) but the views more than made up for it. Unlike the UK where such stunning countryside would be populated by stately piles, this scenery was home to rusting hulks, trailer homes and wooden shacks.
We finally descended the mountains and crossed the river into Ohio, arriving in Athens for our overnight stop.
Wildlife watch: young beaver crossing the road in West Virginia
Today's tune: Country Roads by John Denver or Olivia Newton John.
